Nigerian rapper Mi Abaga has applauded veteran singer Eedris Abdulkareem, Grammy-winner Burna Boy, and social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) for their courage and activism.
Speaking on the Menism podcast, M.I described Eedris as fearless in addressing societal issues through music, comparing his influence back then to Burna Boy’s current impact.
He noted that Eedris had an energetic style similar to Rema, citing his hit song “Mr Lecturer” as proof of his conscious artistry.
He said:
“It’s a different thing when you’re a young rapper and you look up to Eldee The Don. Then there’s Ruggedman, who brought a new flair to rap. But Eedris Abdulkareem was just like Rema.
When you see Rema now, that was the energy Eedris had back then. He was the Burna Boy of that time.
Rema has it, but thinking about it, Eedris was more like Burna and VDM. He would say a thing, put it out there, and everyone would sing it. He has a song called ‘Mr Lecturer’ and so many other conscious tracks.”
