Popular Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of surrogacy in Nigeria, warning that it could easily become a tool for exploiting financially vulnerable women if not properly regulated.

Speaking during an interview on News Central, the actress emphasised the urgent need for Nigeria to implement strict laws and legal frameworks to protect the rights, health, and emotional well-being of surrogates.

According to Henshaw, surrogacy, though a source of hope for many battling infertility, comes with significant physical and emotional tolls that should not be ignored.

“Surrogacy is a means to exploit people who are not financially capable — you just pay them to carry a child. But what legal obligation do you have to care for them before and after the birth?” she questioned.

She further stressed the importance of having clear documentation and legal backing for surrogacy arrangements, adding that the process involves much more than financial transactions.

“It shouldn’t be something done lightly. There are lots of emotions involved — mental and physical changes. Women go through a lot. Some even die during childbirth. Nigeria needs working laws, not mere suggestions,” she added.

The actress called on lawmakers and relevant authorities to put in place robust legislation to ensure that surrogacy does not become another avenue for the exploitation of the poor.
