Super Eagles-eligible defender Tosin Adarabioyo stole the spotlight with a dominant display in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Espérance Tunis at the FIFA Club World Cup, earning the Man of the Match award in the process.

The towering centre-back, who recently joined the Blues from Fulham, opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 45th minute, connecting with Enzo Fernández’s pinpoint delivery. His goal sparked a quickfire double, as Liam Delap netted moments later to extend Chelsea’s lead. Tyrique George sealed the win deep into stoppage time.

Adarabioyo, who captained the side, impressed with a near-perfect defensive performance—registering 126 touches, 97% pass accuracy, four clearances, and winning all his aerial duels, according to Absolute Chelsea. He also had a shot on target in what was a commanding 90-minute outing.

His performance earned applause from teammate Cole Palmer, who visibly showed appreciation for the defender’s efforts, further highlighting Adarabioyo’s growing influence at Stamford Bridge.

With the win, Chelsea booked a spot in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup, where they will face Portuguese giants Benfica—marking a reunion for Enzo Fernández with his former club.

Adarabioyo Speaks on Nigeria National Team Prospects

In a separate interview with Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba, following Chelsea’s 4-1 triumph over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa Conference League final, Adarabioyo addressed ongoing speculation about his international future.

“Yeah, so both of those pieces of news are pretty false,” he said. “I’ve never turned down Nigeria, and I’ve never had any conversations with them to say that I will be going to Nigeria.

“At the point of last season, when there was a little bit of conversation, I told the club I just wanted to focus on club football in my last year at Fulham. Now I’m at Chelsea, in my first year, which I wanted to concentrate on again. I think now is going to be the time that I need to make a decision.”

His comments suggest a growing openness to representing Nigeria at the senior level—a decision that could come soon as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Should England continue to overlook him, Adarabioyo may finally opt to don the green and white of his ancestral homeland.
