American R&B star Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to a serious assault charge related to a 2023 nightclub incident in London.

Appearing in a UK court on Friday, the 36-year-old singer, dressed in a dark suit and glasses, responded “Not guilty, ma’am” when the charge was read out. He is accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent during an alleged altercation in Hanover Square, London, on February 19, 2023.

Brown, currently out on a £5 million bail, faces trial from October 26, 2026. He could lose the bail money if he fails to appear in court. He’s also barred from contacting the alleged victim, Abraham Diah, or visiting the nightclub where the incident took place.

The singer, who was briefly detained in May at a Manchester hotel after flying in by private jet, has been allowed to continue his international tour. He’s set to perform in London this Saturday, with other stops scheduled in France, Portugal, and the US before concluding in Memphis in October.

Brown and his co-defendant, US national Omololu Akinlolu, face multiple charges—including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon (a bottle). Both men denied the grievous bodily harm charge; they’ll respond to the remaining counts on July 11.

Known for hits like “Kiss, Kiss,” the Grammy-winning artist’s career has often been overshadowed by legal troubles and past controversies, including his infamous relationship with Rihanna.
