Be Battle-Ready Against Terrorism – Army Chief Tells Fresh Recruits

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on new soldiers of the Nigerian Army to remain ready to combat terrorism, insurgency, and other national threats. He gave this charge during the Passing Out Parade of the 88 Regular Recruits Intake at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Saturday.

A total of 6,195 recruits officially joined the Army after completing their basic military training, which began on January 13, 2025.

Uphold Courage, Discipline, and Patriotism — Oluyede

Addressing the fresh soldiers, Oluyede reminded them that the military profession demands sacrifice, resilience, and loyalty to the country. He urged them to uphold the Army’s core values: discipline, loyalty, integrity, selfless service, courage, and respect for others.

“You are now part of our nation’s solution to insecurity,” he said. “Wherever you are deployed, your actions must reflect your training. Display courage even when the situation seems tough.”

Oluyede emphasized that being a soldier means prioritizing national interest over personal comfort. He encouraged the recruits to carry the spirit of service into every mission.

You Represent the Nation’s Strength

The Army Chief stressed that the recruits are joining a force trusted with protecting Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty. He said the training they received has equipped them to face real-life challenges on the field.

“Today, you’ve earned your place in this noble institution. Let your conduct reflect excellence and professionalism at all times,” he added. “The journey ahead won’t be easy, but your determination will carry you through.”

Oluyede urged them to remain committed and lead by example. He said the Army expects them to maintain high standards, both during operations and in everyday life.

Reaffirming the Army’s commitment to the wellbeing of its personnel, Oluyede said the Headquarters will continue to prioritize welfare and support.

“You deserve a short break after this milestone,” he said. “But be prepared for duty, as we’re already advancing the process for the 89 Regular Recruits Intake.”

He encouraged the soldiers to stay focused, reminding them that the values they’ve learned will guide them through the most difficult assignments.

Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his ongoing support for the military. He also thanked other stakeholders who have contributed to the success of the training.

“I appreciate the President for his belief in the Nigerian Army and his commitment to improving national security,” he said.

A Call to Service and Sacrifice

The parade marks the beginning of a new journey for the recruits. Their commitment will be tested as they step into roles critical to Nigeria’s peace and stability.

With the nation facing ongoing security challenges, the recruits—representing people of all genders and backgrounds—now carry the responsibility of defending Nigeria’s future.
