Union Bank of Nigeria, through its UnionCares initiative, recently sponsored a mathematics competition aimed at students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The event was held in collaboration with the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf.

Taking place at Wesley School for the Deaf in Surulere, Lagos, the competition embraced the theme “Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria.” It provided a platform for young learners to showcase their skills and advocate for equal access to quality education.

The competition attracted participants from schools across Lagos, both within and outside the deaf community. Representatives from Union Bank, the Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and teachers also attended, showing strong institutional support.

Olufunmilola Aluko, Chief Brand and Marketing Officer at Union Bank, shared the bank’s vision for inclusive growth.

“At Union Bank, we believe true development must include everyone. That’s why we invest in meaningful platforms like this. Today, these students proved that their abilities go far beyond perceived limitations. They are problem-solvers and future leaders,” she stated.

Likewise, Francis Ajomiwe, Founder and Executive Director of the Ajofa Foundation, expressed his appreciation. Speaking through an interpreter, he emphasized the importance of partnerships in expanding educational access.

“Union Bank’s support brought this competition to life. We remain dedicated to empowering deaf students through focused educational programmes,” he noted.

Mathematics as a Tool for Empowerment

During her remarks, Bukunola Famakinwa from the Lagos State Education Authority highlighted the challenges and possibilities that deaf students face in subjects like mathematics. Nevertheless, she pointed out that the right support can lead to academic excellence.

“With encouragement and proper tools, deaf learners can excel. Mathematics, in particular, enables them to solve real-world problems, make informed decisions, and fully participate in society,” she explained.

The competition concluded with Samuel Megbodofo, Tomilola Shonubi, and Opeoluwa Saka emerging as the top three winners. They received branded gifts and recognition from Union Bank. In addition, all other participants and teachers were presented with appreciation packages.
