The Nigerian Senate approved a budget of N124.2 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2025 fiscal year. The decision came after the Senate Committee on Police Affairs presented its report during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Senator Yunus Akintunde, vice-chairman of the committee and representative of Oyo Central, said the committee carefully reviewed the proposal. He confirmed they retained the original budget. Of the total, N1.2 billion will cover personnel costs, while N98.6 billion will fund capital projects to boost the Nigeria Police Force’s operational capacity.

Budget to Fund Training, Facilities, and Vehicles

The budget will support nationwide training programs to enhance officers’ skills. It will also cover the renovation and construction of police stations across the country. Additionally, police barracks and health facilities will receive upgrades to improve living and working conditions for officers.

Akintunde highlighted plans to buy compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. These will improve police mobility and reduce fuel costs, promoting cleaner energy use.

He stressed the importance of quickly implementing the budget due to Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. “Timely execution is critical to equipping our police to protect the nation effectively,” he said.

Senate President Emphasizes Oversight and Accountability

Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the committee’s efforts. He described the budget approval as a bold and necessary step toward improving national security. “This budget is more than numbers on paper; it is an essential investment in every Nigerian’s safety and well-being,” he stated.

Akpabio urged the committee to ensure strict oversight. He emphasized that every kobo allocated must be used responsibly and transparently.

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund aims to provide sustainable funding for police training, welfare, and operational needs. The new budget will strengthen the police force’s ability to respond to security threats and maintain peace across the country.
