As Nigeria approaches the 2027 General Elections, political momentum is building around former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai. On Thursday, a new political movement, the Nasiru El-Rufai Solidarity Group, also known as Nasiriya, inaugurated its Sokoto State chapter under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The group’s National Coordinator, Ibrahim Babuga, led the inauguration ceremony. He described Nasiriya as a growing grassroots movement built on reformist principles. According to him, the group champions values such as good governance, youth inclusion, accountability, and transparency.
Babuga noted that Nasiriya has gained a strong presence across Northern Nigeria, especially in Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri, Niger, Katsina, and Sokoto States. He said the group serves as a platform for Nigerians seeking progressive leadership beyond traditional politics.
“Our goal is to offer Nigerians an alternative that puts people first. We are building a structure that reflects El-Rufai’s record of efficient leadership and bold reforms,” he said.
He also called on more women to engage in the political process and assured that the group would support any woman interested in contesting in the 2027 elections.
El-Rufai’s Entry Seen as Game Changer
Alhaji Sani Romo, Chairman of the SDP in Sokoto State, welcomed the movement and reaffirmed the party’s strong roots in the region. He described El-Rufai’s alignment with the SDP as a strategic boost ahead of 2027.
“With El-Rufai on our side, we are no longer spectators, we are contenders,” Romo stated. He also called on young people to play an active role in reshaping the political landscape.
Movement Aims to Restore Northern Progress
Alhaji Sunusi Gidadawa, the group’s State Grand Patron, said the movement reflects shared aspirations for the North’s revival. He stressed the urgency of restoring security, promoting agriculture, and encouraging unity.
“We believe El-Rufai can help reposition the North for long-term development and stability,” Gidadawa said.
Earlier, State Coordinator Sunusi Lamido pledged continued mobilisation efforts. He praised El-Rufai’s leadership and encouraged members to remain steadfast and united in pursuit of change.
