The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to improving Nigeria’s social welfare systems and empowering vulnerable communities. This pledge came during a two-day capacity-building workshop for social workers in Kano State, where participants gained essential tools to tackle pressing challenges in social welfare.

Dr. Yakubu Kofamarta, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the vital role social workers play in fostering social justice, inclusion, and empowerment. He expressed optimism that this workshop would be a “turning point” for strengthening the social work profession in Nigeria.

“Social work lays the foundation for progress in any nation,” Dr. Kofamarta stated. “As challenges like poverty, gender-based violence, and child protection grow, we must equip social workers with the skills and knowledge to effectively address these issues.”

Investing in Frontline Workers

The workshop focused on a range of critical issues, such as poverty, gender-based violence, and the emotional toll of working with vulnerable populations. Dr. Kofamarta emphasized that the workshop represented a strategic investment in the dedicated professionals who are central to the nation’s humanitarian sector.

He also explained that social workers ensure that government policies and programs reach those most in need. These professionals directly influence child welfare, community empowerment, elder care, and rehabilitation services, making their role essential.

A Priority for Social Workers’ Success

Despite their significant impact, social workers face many challenges. The emotional burden of their responsibilities, combined with the increasing demand for social services, necessitates ongoing training and innovation. Dr. Kofamarta stressed that continuous professional development is crucial to ensure social workers can meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction is committed to expanding capacity-building initiatives to equip frontline workers with the necessary skills and resources to provide high-quality services. Furthermore, Dr. Kofamarta highlighted the ministry’s efforts to establish the Nigerian Council for Social Work and expand social protection programs.

Promoting Social Development in Kano State

Hajia Amina Abdullah, Commissioner for Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Disabled, also addressed the workshop participants. Represented by Mr. Mohammed Iliyasu, the Director of Administration, she emphasized that social development is not merely a duty but a profound responsibility to uplift vulnerable groups.

Hajia Abdullah encouraged participants to refine their existing skills and explore innovative solutions that can positively impact children, disabled individuals, and other marginalized communities.

The technical sessions during the workshop covered the development of the social work profession in Nigeria, the Social Work Regulatory Act, and ethical practices essential for social work. Additionally, the sessions discussed providing psychological support to individuals experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction is focused on strengthening Nigeria’s social welfare systems to build a more inclusive, resilient, and empowered society. Their emphasis on professional development ensures that social workers have the necessary tools to support vulnerable populations and contribute to sustainable progress across the nation.
