Nigerian Grammy Awards winning superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has advised fellow artists in the music industry to shift their focus from local popularity to global impact.

In a bold message posted via his Instagram story on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Burna Boy cautioned against getting carried away by social media trends and chart success within Nigeria. According to him, domestic recognition can be deceptive and should not be mistaken for true success on the global stage.

“Dear artists, don’t let Twitter polls and Naija social media fans deceive you,” he wrote. “They won’t fill up any stadium for you in any part of the world.”

Streaming Revenues: A Reality Check for Nigerian Artists

He emphasized that while Nigerian fans may be loud online, their support often doesn’t translate into real-world metrics such as ticket sales or international relevance. Burna Boy went on to break down the financial side of music streaming, highlighting the stark contrast in revenue between Nigeria and Western countries.

“1,000,000 Nigerian streams = $300/€400,” he stated. “1,000,000 streams in the UK, US, or Europe = $3000/€4000.”

With these figures, the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker stressed that topping music charts in Nigeria is not a significant achievement when compared to the earning potential and audience reach available in other parts of the world.

“Your song being number 1 on any platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate,” he added. “Aim higher or do other business on the side. I type with love.”

Orezi Joins the Conversation with Personal Confession

The statement has stirred conversations within the Nigerian music scene, sparking both agreement and criticism from fans and fellow musicians alike.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Nigerian singer Orezi also made headlines after commenting on Burna Boy’s recent clash with socialite Sophia Egbueje, involving a Lamborghini controversy. During an interview with Echo Room, Orezi revealed that he had once promised a house to a woman in exchange for intimacy, a promise he ultimately didn’t fulfill.

Defending his actions, Orezi remarked that men are not the only ones who break promises, pointing out that women often fail to keep their word about staying faithful in relationships.

Both incidents have sparked debate around the expectations placed on celebrities and the realities of fame, money, and loyalty in the entertainment world.
