In a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasized that consular officers have full access to immigration records and will not overlook past violations. It also dismissed any claims of “honest mistakes,” stressing that individuals are solely responsible for adhering to visa regulations.

“If you overstay your U.S. visa, you could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States as well as criminal prosecution. Consular officers have full access to your immigration history and will know about past violations. There is no such thing as an ‘honest mistake’ – it is your responsibility to use your visa correctly,” the statement read.
