Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, has strongly criticized former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, over his remarks against President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Ata dismissed Kwankwaso’s stance, urging him to refrain from making “misguided” comments on national matters, especially when they concern security and stability. The minister argued that Tinubu’s decision was necessary to restore order and safeguard lives and property in Rivers State.

In a statement issued by his Publicity Aide, Seyi Olorunsola, Ata praised Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a president who is responsive to national challenges and committed to the well-being of Nigerians.

“The declaration of a state of emergency was an urgent step to prevent further political unrest in Rivers State. President Tinubu acted within the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants him the authority to enforce emergency measures with proper legislative oversight. Any state grappling with prolonged instability should take corrective action rather than allowing the situation to deteriorate,” Ata said.

‘Kwankwaso Should Focus on Kano’s Crisis’

The minister did not hold back in his criticism of Kwankwaso, accusing him of hypocrisy and selective concern for governance. He challenged the former governor to direct his attention to the lingering crisis in the Kano Emirate Council, which he alleged was exacerbated by Kwankwaso’s influence over Governor Abba Yusuf.

“Kwankwaso has consistently demonstrated a poor grasp of governance and the rule of law. Instead of commenting on Rivers State, he should focus on the deepening crisis in Kano, where his political interference has worsened the emirship tussle and led to blatant disregard for court orders,” Ata remarked.

Ata, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, further accused Kwankwaso of fostering a culture of political intimidation during his tenure as governor, claiming that he consistently undermined legislative independence and democratic institutions.

National Assembly Applauded for Swift Action

The minister also commended the National Assembly for its prompt approval of the president’s emergency declaration, highlighting the lawmakers’ role in preventing further escalation of tensions in Rivers State.

According to Ata, the legislative review of security reports played a critical role in ensuring stability, preventing potential violence, and protecting vital infrastructure, including oil pipelines.

He particularly lauded lawmakers from Kano and other northern states for putting national security above political differences, emphasizing that their decision reflected a commitment to peace and stability.

Ata maintained that President Tinubu’s intervention was a necessary and lawful step to prevent Rivers State from descending into further chaos, urging political figures like Kwankwaso to prioritize national unity over personal or partisan interests.
