A prominent Ijaw socio-cultural group, the Ijaw Nation Development Group (INDG), has accused former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of ingratitude following his recent remarks about the Ijaw ethnic group.
In a statement on Saturday, the INDG, also known as the Ijaw People’s Assembly, condemned Wike’s alleged reference to the Ijaw Nation as a minority group. They described his comments as inflammatory and a blatant disregard for the authority of Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara.
‘Ijaws Played a Key Role in Wike’s Rise to Power’
The group emphasized that the Ijaw people played a crucial role in the creation of Rivers State and were instrumental in Wike’s political success. They warned that their contributions and sacrifices should not be disregarded.
“It is particularly disheartening that Mr. Wike, who rose to power through the benevolence and support of the Ijaw people, has chosen to cast aspersions upon the very community that stood by him,” the statement read.
Accusation of Political Manipulation
The INDG further accused Wike of fueling political unrest in Rivers State in an attempt to control Governor Fubara. They vowed to resist any efforts to subjugate the Ijaw people.
“We issue a strong warning to Mr. Wike to desist from further divisive comments that could incite tribal conflict and destabilize Rivers State. The Ijaw Nation will not tolerate any attempt to sow discord,” the group stated.
Call for Presidential Intervention
The INDG also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain Wike, warning that his actions could threaten Nigeria’s fragile democracy and economic stability.
“Leadership demands responsibility, and it is imperative that all public figures act with decorum and respect for the unity of our nation,” the group added.
Ijaw Group Reaffirms Commitment to Unity
As tensions continue to mount, the group reaffirmed its commitment to unity, development, and the protection of Ijaw rights. They vowed to work alongside other organizations to ensure peace and progress in Rivers State.
