The Borno State Police Command has re-arrested one of the convicts, Auwalu Aminu aka Auwalu Kirkir, aged 24, who escaped from a correctional facility in the state during the recent flooding that submerged Maiduguri and its environs.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Nahum Daso, said in a statement on Wednesday that the convict escaped due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which collapsed the fence of the correctional facility.
He said, “Auwalu Aminu who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodian Centre in Maiduguri, unfortunately escaped due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which collapsed the fence of the facility.
“On October 16, 2024, police surveillance at the Bama Area Command/Banki Divisional headquarters received a credible tip-off that Auwalu Kirkir was sighted in Banki town. The police patrol swiftly responded and apprehended the said Awalu Aminu.”
According to the statement, “The convict has been profiled and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.”
Daso further said the command remained committed to ensuring safety and urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity or information regarding fugitives to the nearest police station or through the following channels: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.
It was earlier reported that no fewer than 281 inmates escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre following severe flooding in the capital city.
Meanwhile, Auwalu Aminu became the third re-arrested escape after one Abubakar Mohammed and Kyari Kur were recently arrested as convicts who escaped from the prison during the September 10 flood.
