Many injured as hoodlums attack Atiku’s campaign convoy in Borno
The convoy of former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was attacked in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday.
Vondigest reports that that scores of supporters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar were injured on Wednesday when hoodlums, attacked the convoy of the presidential hopeful in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Wednesday.
The presidential campaign trail of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP landed in Borno, an All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled state, on Wednesday.
Vondigest reports that in a video seen on social media, a group of people were seen running in different directions as gunshots rend the air.
It was gathered that Atiku’s convoy was attacked just as he left the Palace of the Shehu of Borno to Ramat Square, the venue of the presidential rally
This online platform gathered that there were vandalised vehicles in the convoy of Atiku at Ramat Square in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The injured persons have since been rushed to hospitals in the state capital.
Spokesman of the Atiku Campaign, Senator Dino Malaye, blamed the attack on the ruling party in Borno.
Melaye lamented that more than 70 people were hospitalised.
“They wanted to prevent us from doing holding the campaign, as we speak, 74 people were injured and hospitalised.
“Several vehicles were vandalised by APC thugs.”
The APC is yet to react to Melaye’s allegation as of the time of filing this report.
According to Daily Trust, their correspondent saw hundreds of suspected political thugs at strategic locations along Maiduguri/Kano road.
PDP presidential candidate Atiku, while addressing thousands of supporters, later on, sympathized with the injured and said no amount of intimidation can stop the PDP from sending the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) packing from the Aso Rock and the Borno State Government House in 2023.
Atiku was in Borno alongside his running mate and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa; Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State; former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; amongst other chieftains of the party.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Kamaldeen Mohammed said a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Bormo has been home to the then All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) now the APC since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
