Protest Erupts in Abuja, Car Burnt as Many Trapped Are Inside Churches
The Karu community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has engulfed in panic following a street protest by commercial motorcycle operators.
Multiple media sources including The Nation reported that police and soldiers have been deployed to restore peace and order.
Many vehicles were attacked as residents stayed indoors while many churches in the area have been locked.
Residents of Karu, Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Orozo, Karshi are towns in the area affected. Residents and motorists have been asked to keep off the route until normalcy is restored.
According to Daily Sun, Okada riders embarked on the protest on Sunday morning, May 9, after one of their colleagues was allegedly shot and killed by the police. The protesters, who gathered in their numbers embarked, on a peaceful protest that later took a dangerous turn. This, according to the publication, prompted the Commander Army Headquarters Garrison (AHQG), Major-General Dahiru, to deploy soldiers when the situation could not be curtailed by the police operatives who earlier arrived at the hot spots. Soldiers will remain there until peace is restored according to the military command.
