Yagazie Foundation partners with Aspira Nigeria to conduct a WASH project in three community schools in Nigeria
Yagazie Foundation partnered with Aspira Nigeria Limited, the makers of Household and Toiletries Products to facilitate a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Project in three community schools in Lagos.
Poor access to improved water and sanitation in Nigeria remains a significant contributing factor to high morbidity and mortality rates among children under five.
The use of contaminated drinking water and poor sanitary conditions result in increased vulnerability to water-borne diseases, including diarrhoea, which leads to the deaths of more than 70,000 children under five annually.
73% of the diarrhoeal and enteric disease burden is associated with poor access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and is disproportionately borne by poorer children.
Frequent episodes of WASH-related ill-health in children contribute to absenteeism in school and malnutrition. Only 26.5% of the population uses improved drinking water sources and sanitation facilities. Also, 22% of the population defecates in the open. (Culled from UNICEF Nigeria)
Without water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), people’s well-being, dignity and opportunities are severely compromised and possess a high level of risk, especially women and girls who are the most vulnerable.
The names and population strength of the community schools are:
- City Pride School, Lekki
Pupils Teachers and Supporting Teachers 530 - Surulere senior secondary school
Teachers inclusive 600 - Surulere community junior secondary school
Teachers inclusive 400
We enlightened the pupils and students in the three schools on cultivating a proper hygienic habit.
Our Facilitators, Kennedy Ezirim, Divine Chinyere Ezendiokwere and Chiamaka Ononiwu, the population strength of the schools is a total of 1530 beneficiaries today.
