Kaduna: Terrorists Attack Military Base, Kill 10 Soldiers, many wounded
Vondigest gathers that an attack on a military base in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna state has led to the killing of 10 soldiers by terrorists and many soldiers wounded as well.
The incident happened at about 6:30pm on Monday, security sources told Channels Television. However, the military authorities have yet to confirm the attack.
A security source in the area told Channels Television on Tuesday that the soldiers were attacked at an Army Forward Operational Base located around the Polwire area close to Mikati Farm along the Kaduna- Birnin Gwari Road.
The Cable reports that the attack was carried out by the gunmen who invaded the facility in their numbers while engaging the troops in a fierce gun battle. It was also gathered that 19 other soldiers were wounded during the attack on the base located in Birnin Gwari LGA.
Some sources within the military who spoke on the incident said the terrorists came on motorcycles and carried heavy weapons including rocket-propelled grenades (RPG).
He explained that the soldiers, who were few in number, were taken unaware by the terrorists who stormed the base in large numbers on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons and immediately opened fire on the soldiers.
According to the source, the bandits monitored the movement of the soldiers and when some of them went out to the headquarters of the Forward Operational Base located inside Birnin-Gwari town, they immediately launched an attack on the few soldiers at the FOB extension.
The superior firepower of the bandits led to the death of about 10 soldiers, while a patrol vehicle was also destroyed during the attack.
The source revealed that the attack lasted for about two hours on the military base and left the soldiers dislodged with many others numbering about 19 injured.
According to the source: “We lost 10 men while 19 soldiers were wounded in action after they overwhelmed the troops. They also burnt down three armoured personnel carriers (APC) after they overwhelmed the troops.”
This online platform also gathered that the wounded soldiers have been evacuated to Birnin Gwari General Hospital and 271 Nigerian Airforce Medical Center. Also, those who were killed during the attack have been moved to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna (44 NARHK) in Kaduna.
The attack on the military base comes days after gunmen attacked a train in Kaduna, which left several people dead and scores injured.
